Gemstone jewelry is often very striking. Because gemstones come in a wide variety of colors, they can be effectively used to create very colorful, ornately designed pieces of jewelry. However, because gemstones can be real or artificial, it is important to know what you’re getting.

The number one thing to remember about determining whether a piece of gemstone jewelry is real or synthetic is that you probably can’t tell the difference, at least not with the naked eye. However, you’re not alone, as even the most experienced gem expert is often unable to make a determination by simply looking at the piece. Most experts agree that the best way to avoid purchasing fake stones is to only buy from reputable jewelers.

There are two main types of identification when it comes to gemstone jewelry; determinative and confirmative. Determinative identification refers to the process of determining what the stone is exactly; asking “what is this”? Confirmative identification is the process of determining whether the stone is real of synthetic.
